Truth or Fiction?

I am loyal in my attendance, generous in my giving, kind in my criticism, creative in my suggestions, loving in my attitudes. Twenty-Four Hours a Day.

Over the years I have heard so many “Truths,” “Facts,” “Musts,” in our Mutual Support Fellowship and quite frankly, there were times that not only did I believe them, I also preached them! There is no doubt about it when it comes to alcoholism or addiction there is a level of rigidity that we all seem to embrace in order to hold ourselves accountable to our goal of permanent abstinence. But that does not make it “Fact” for others. The founders were extremely careful to keep the “Musts” out of the literature. Yet, we continue to develop our personal narrative and work diligently to get others to see it our way!

We love to use “Facts” to prove our point, they exclaim, “back when “The Program” started they had a 70% success rate, and that is why you need to do it this way!” But remember the Mark Twain quote, “there are three types of lies: Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics.” There is always a margin of error in statistics and “The Numbers!” My first meeting was in March of 1980, I was 19 years old and I was in jail. I didn’t get sober until 1988, I went to meetings, I attempted to remain abstinent at times. If you ran “The Numbers” in 1987 I would have been part of the unsuccessful rate…

How often do we go to a meeting today and there is a large passenger van or two in the parking lot of people coming from the local rehab for a meeting? I am positive they are all attending under their own will and desire to stop drinking! Multiply that by at least 18,000 SAMHSA registered treatment centers across the country and the county jails in every state, and the DUI, Drug and Mental Health courts across the country forcing people into Twelve Step programs! Think that skews the numbers a bit?

Imagine being so stuck in your opinion and belief system that you never attempted to advance. Imagine if the medical field stuck with doing open-heart surgery the way they did in 1935 because 70% of the patients lived! Seriously, stop with the musts, facts, and the “this is how it is done” BS and stop pushing people away and move to attract people to a new way of life! The founders fought this out in 1939, listening to a self-appointed “archivist” or the “Big Book” thumpers twisting every word to fit their narrative borders on…

Life is meant to be enjoyed and not endured!
