The Risk of Recovery

Our lives improve only when we take chances – and the first and most difficult risk we can take is to be honest with ourselves.” – Walter Anderson

The risk of recovery!  People often balk at step one, we admitted we were powerless over alcohol and our lives had become unmanageable.  They get hung up on the concept of powerlessness!  However as a professional, it is not in the spirit of recovery to be pushy and to prove our point, more importantly it is about getting the right message to the individual with the challenge that matters.

What is the point?  Being honest with ourselves is integral to any chance of recovering.  Looking at my drinking pattern and history can be revealing.  For me personally, a defining moment in my recovery was when I was in a 12 step recovery meeting in New York and a young gentleman shared.  He said, “I do not know what is happening.  I told my wife I was going to the Deli for milk and cigarettes and I woke up in St. Louis!”

Bam!!!  The light went off in my head, that is me!  I could not predict when I put alcohol to my lips what would happen.  I did not know where I would go, what I would do, or how I would act.  So if you want to call that powerless or any other term feel free to do so.  However, when we are honest with ourselves and we evaluate ourselves we will know that it is worth the risk of recovery!

Go, Go, Go…

Dan 🙂
