The Land of the Living

“And in the end it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.”  — Abraham Lincoln

When I was young it was all about the party!  I thought that partying was all that mattered.  I remember my mom saying to me that I needed to stop this nonsense.  I remember clearly my response, if I stop what will life be?  I remember laying in my jail cell facing over fifty years in prison and thinking if I do not party how will I get married?  How could I have a wedding without the toast and party?  How could you Baptize your child without a party?  How could I go to a funeral without drinking?  These were all legitimate questions to me.  I was worried about marriage and children, I did not have a girlfriend let alone someone to marry!  Besides the big obstacle of a potential fifty years in jail!

Drinking alcohol, and using drugs stifled my life.  Today I meet people in their thirties and forties and I hear similar excuses.  I laugh when they call their addictive behavior partying!  The partying had stopped many years prior, they just did not come to terms with it.  In recovery from addiction and alcoholism our years become productive.  We can be, do and have what we want.   When it is in congruence with our values we have joy and freedom.  That is the life for me and for thousands of others that have and continue to walk the path of recovery, welcome to the land of the living!

Go, Go, Go…
