The chains of habit…

“Chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken.” — Warren Buffett

No matter whether you believe addiction is a disease or a habit of sorts the recreational use of alcohol or drugs often if not always occurs prior to the onset of abuse or dependence. I see kids every day finding themselves in rehab for serious drug addiction. When I do an intake for some of these kids it is not uncommon to find out that they began use at the age of 8, 9 or 10. I must be honest, I thought I started early at age 11. But at age 8?

I look at pictures of my kids at the age of 8 and think of their innocence at that age. Then I look at these kids at the age of 18, 19, or 20 in their 4th, 5th, and in some cases 12th or 13th rehab! I think of how often I hear of kids share about losing a friend or in many cases several friends to overdose deaths. It troubles my heart.

By the same token I watch as many kids are healed. I see the motivation they begin to feel as they start to accomplish building a recovery foundation, get jobs, go back to school and begin to build a new life. When they begin to experience hope back in their lives or maybe for the first time in their life, it is rewarding. Will they stay clean and sober? God only knows, but as I look back on my recovery I have many friends that began their recovery process at 19 and remain sober today! Hope, love and life reinvigorated! Life is good…

Go, Go, Go…
