Your past is important but it is not nearly as important to your present as the way you see your future.
— Tony Campolo
I am constantly reminding people that they are not their past, their past played a role in their current situation. However, that is not who they are, that is what they did! As addicts and alcoholics we are constantly reminded of our past, we use the past to prevent us from moving forward. We embrace the “I CAN’T” syndrome. We live in yesterday instead of the possibilities. Once we have accepted that we are not our past we are the man or woman that we choose right here and now we are free from the bondage of self, we need to believe that.
When I finally surrendered I embraced the “Ninth Step Promises”. They were my hope, I knew that if I worked the steps and focused on where I was heading and kept myself out of my past with the exception of completing my step work, particularly step 4,5 8 & 9 I would KNOW A NEW FREEDOM! I can report that after nearly 23 years I do not regret it! Life is goooood!
Go, Go, Go…
