Pain is not Optional

“Pain is a part of being alive, and we need to learn that. Pain does not last forever, nor is it necessarily unbeatable, and we need to be taught that.”
– Harold Kushner

The idea that we will never be in pain is ludicrous.  Physical pain is the body telling us that something is wrong.  Mental pain is exactly the same.  We need to use pain as an indicator that it is time to shift direction and sometimes shift our life strategies.  Of course pain of losing a loved one requires embracing the pain and allowing the process to develop and heal.

Avoiding pain in any situation can only lead to destructive behavior.  Dwelling in pain can lead to inconsistent behavior and lead to a depressive period.  However, staying focused on our strategies, shifting when necessary and accepting the consequences of our actions allows us to overcome any obstacle we face.  Pain is not optional but it is temporary in most cases.

Fighting the pain surely doesn’t help, accepting it is the only way. As the children’s song goes “you can’t go over it, you can’t go round it, you’ve got to go through it”
And peace does come!
