Living in the Day

The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, or anticipate troubles but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly.”  – Buddha

Obviously, I am not a Buddhist, but this spiritual guru had an enormous amount of wisdom.  That word “health” could easily be changed to recovery and fit the bill for those of us with the challenge of addiction.  Living in the day takes focus.  It starts by deciding to remain abstinent for today.  As we progress in our recovery we begin to see clearly that abstinence is a better way of life.

Once we recognize this fact we then take action to commit our lives to abstinence, productivity and the Spiritual life.  The ninth step promises state that we will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door upon it.   Regret is a joy stealer.  Living in yesterday is harmful to our health.  Fear and worry of the future robs us of today.  We will have hope for the future when we live the recovered life.  As we recover we will find ourselves filled with the anticipation of a child on Christmas eve when we think of what the future will bring!

Yes, it starts with today, it starts with the decision to live joyfully.  That is the Spiritual path!

Go, Go, Go…
