It is Well

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, It is well, it is well, with my soul.  Horatio Spafford.

In 1873 Horatio Spafford wrote the lyrics for the song “It is Well”.  His family was heading to England on the Steamship, Ville Du Havre.  Horatio had been held behind for business purposes, he sent his wife and four children on their way and he would follow.  During the voyage the steamship was in a crash with another ship and it sunk.  All four of his daughters died in the tragedy.  On the subsequent journey to meet with his grieving wife as she survived the wreck, at the very spot that the ship went down he wrote the lyrics to “It is Well”.

Yesterday we addressed Tiger Woods.  If you watched the video of the Tiger apology you may have noticed that Tiger spoke of his recovery and the need for a spiritual grounding.  In recovery having a sense of “It is Well” is truly a gift, a spiritual gift.  Peace like a river in all areas of our lives is essential.  Surely we will face trouble, temptation, challenges, hurts, pains as well as joy and abundance.  However, knowing that “It is Well” in good and bad is the epitome of true recovery!
Go, Go, Go…
