“Death is not the greatest loss in life, the greatest loss is what dies in us while we are still alive.”
– Norman Cousins
Addiction and alcoholism rob us of every fiber of life while we are actively using or drinking. The walking dead. I remember walking into the rooms and hearing “welcome to the land of the living”. I knew immediately what they were saying because I was the epitome of the walking dead. I remember as a teenager when my uncle took me to the Veterans Hospital. There were men walking around the grounds and on the wards that were “out of it”. I asked him what happened to them and he responded that they “ruined their minds by drinking too much”.
That vision stayed with me forever. I remember thinking to myself in my lowest of low days that I was not going to die I was going to live a long and miserable life! Today in hindsight, I was right about one thing, I was not going to die! Today I live a happy, joyous and free life. I am grateful that recovery held it’s arms wide open for me. I love life and enjoy sharing it with anyone that is willing to listen, because life is goooooood!
Go, Go, Go…
