“The most important thing is to be whatever you are without shame.”
– Rod Steiger
Guilt and shame are emotions we cannot afford to accommodate on a daily basis. I have often heard it said that guilt is a BS emotion. Of course that is not completely true, it is definitely an emotion that we need to experience it keeps us honest. However, it is when we utilize the emotion to beat ourselves up that it is toxic and counterproductive. Many of us use guilt and shame to stay sick. We use it to pity ourselves and remain stuck in the problem rather than focus on the solution.
The twelve-step process guides us in overcoming these anchors that baffle us. When we get serious about recovery and we do the work we are no longer afflicted with the negative blame game thoughts. We begin to live happy, joyous and free. We live with passion and purpose and we tackle the emotions before they become toxic! Life is good!
